# Passive Thermal Protection for Battery Safety

Skogar® silica aerogel thermal barrier sheets support passive thermal protection for battery safety, from inter-cell barriers to battery enclosures and venting paths.

They help delay thermal runaway propagation, shield surrounding structures and support pack-level survivability during battery failure events across high-performance mobility, ESS, aerospace and defense applications.

### Inter-cell thermal barriers

Placed between cells or modules, Skogar® sheets help reduce heat transfer from a failing cell to adjacent cells, delaying thermal propagation inside the pack.

Available from 0.5 mm and with thermal conductivity down to 0.012 W/(m·K) according to EN 12667, Skogar® combines high thermal insulation with minimal space impact. This supports energy-density optimization from modular packs to CTP, CTB and CTC architectures.

### Battery enclosure and venting path protection

Applied to battery enclosures, surrounding structures, gas venting ducts and sealing interfaces, Skogar® provides passive thermal protection and flame resistance during battery failure events.

## Recommended grades for battery applications

### Skogar® ST

Skogar® ST is the most common grade for compact battery barriers.

Key points:

- rigid glass-fiber substrate;
- thicknesses from 0.5 mm;
- thermal conductivity from 0.012 W/(m·K);
- suitable for compact inter-cell thermal barriers and module insulation.

### Skogar® HT

Skogar® HT is preferred for flexible and higher-temperature insulation.

Key points:

- flexible PAN preox-fiber substrate;
- thicknesses from 2.0 mm;
- thermal conductivity from 0.012 W/(m·K);
- suitable for enclosure insulation, curved geometries and demanding thermal environments;
- FAR 25.853 certified, which can be relevant for aerospace battery systems.

### Grade selection

The right grade depends on cell chemistry, module or pack design, operating temperature, thermal runaway test scenario, mechanical constraints, compression, thickness budget, enclosure design and target qualification route.
